Associations for the Social Sciences



Professional Associations
1  American Library Association is the national support service for librarians in all subfields.  The ALA also provides legislation watch and support for continuing education. The ALA has divisions, round tables, and several smaller committees to support the profession.  www.ala.org

2  APA is the American Psychological Association whose mission is to, “Our mission is to advance the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people's lives.”  www.apa.org

3   International Association for Social Science Information Services & Technology (IASSIST)  This organization supports research and data technology in the social sciences. http://www.iassistdata.org/

4  International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) This organization provides access to an online portal for information, “a convenient single online location for ease of accessibility, search and browsing. It has been launched in summer 2013 with the IFLA World Library and Information Congress papers, and will continue to grow with the addition of existing and new resources.”  http://library.ifla.org/

5  Special Libraries Association (SLA) is a global organization set to provide “innovative information professionals and their strategic partners” (Social Science Division).

6  Anthropology and Sociology Division of Association of College Research Libraries (Anthropology and Sociology Division)

7  Medical Library Association (Medical Library Association) supports librarians in the medical field.

8  AAA American Anthropology Association (AAA American Anthropology Association).  This association provides research support and scholarly communication for anthropologists.

9  Public Library Association of ALA (PLA Public Library Association).  This is a division of ALA which targets professionals in the public library field.

10  RUSA Reference and User Services Association of ALA (RUSA Reference and User Services Association).  RUSA is a very active organization to further research and support for reference librarians.

11  ILF  Indiana Library Federation (ILF Indiana Library Federation) The mission of the ILF is to provide further education, mentoring partnership, and scholarly communication opportunities for librarians in Indiana.  The ILF supports conferences for both children, small public libraries, and all libraries annually.

12  The Bibliographical Society.   The organization claims to be the oldest scholarly society in America, “The oldest scholarly society in North America dedicated to the study of books and manuscripts as physical objects.”  http://bibsocamer.org/
